Adhyay 10 - The Birth of Sri Krishna
Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran
The evil king Kansa had imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after a prophecy said their eighth son would kill him. Kansa killed seven children, but the eighth child was Lord Krishna Himself.
Born at midnight on Janmashtami, Krishna appeared with four arms holding a conch, disc, club, and lotus. The prison gates flew open, and Vasudeva carried the baby across the stormy Yamuna river. The serpent Sheshnag protected the baby from the rain.
In Gokul, Krishna was exchanged with the daughter of Yashoda and Nanda Baba. This divine birth marked the beginning of the end for Kansa and the restoration of joy in the hearts of devotees.
